MUSCAT: Muttrah Souq is arguably one of the oldest marketplaces in the Arab world. For centuries, the souq served as a trading place for goods that passed through Muscat from Europe, Africa, India, China, and other parts of the world.

The iconic souq sells fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices as well as traditional textiles, garments, jewellery, pottery and craftwork.

This ancient marketplace has been renovated and decorated in contemporary Arabic style, with colorful stained-glass windows and bright lanterns under a sturdy timber roof. “Those who come to Oman for a tour never misses a chance to visit Muttrah Souq,” said Abdullah Al Rawahi, a local trader.

“If you’re looking at traditional Omani items, this is the best place to come,” he added.
