MUSCAT: As today is the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, we thought what better way to honour this day than exploring the fascinating vastness called deserts in Oman.

Set on the Arabian Peninsula, Oman is as rich in natural beauty as in ancient heritage. From the green of wadis and endless rolling sand dunes to impenetrably rocky mountains and ancient villages built into desert walls, Oman has plenty to offer when it comes to the best desert safari experiences.

Being closely associated with deserts, Oman’s desert landscape is an extension of the Bedouin lifestyle with its ancient associations of traditional culture and authentic customs. The deserts here are characterised by the diversity of its plants and animals.

On the occasion of World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, Oman represented by the Environment Authority will be participating in an event to celebrate the day.

The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year on June 17, to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving, strong community involvement and cooperation at all levels.

This year, the theme of the International Day Against Desertification, and Drought “Rising up from drought together”, emphasises the need for an early action to avoid disastrous consequences for humanity and the planetary ecosystems, the United Nations website says.
