NEW DELHI: Home of the Ajmer Sharif Darga, the shrine of Khwaja Muin-ud-Din Chishti, Ajmer is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Rajasthan, India. But before delving into it, it’s important to note that Ajmer has a geographical significance as well. For instance, the Luni River begins near Ajmer in the Pushkar valley of the western Aravalli Range at an elevation of about 550m. At this point, the river is also known as the Sagarmati.

In terms of religious significance, Ajmer is a famous destination for the Islamic religion, being home to the famous Ajmer Sharif Dargah, the shrine of Khwaja Muin-ud-Din Chishti. The Dargah has historical significance as well, being built during the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar. In fact, the iconic Mughal ruler also donated two humongous ‘Haandi’, a pot-like utensil used to cook rice and similar rice-based dishes, along with gravy-based dishes. Currently only one of them used to cook food for the pilgrims, while the other is used as a gigantic donation pot.

Ajmer is also home to the Adhai Din Ka Jhopda, a historical mosque dating back to the 12th Century days of the Delhi Sultanate. The mosque was commissioned by Qutb-ud-Din Aibak, the then Sultan of Delhi. It was then further enhanced by Iltutmish of Delhi. An early example of Indo-Islamic architecture, it is the oldest monument in Ajmer, and one of the oldest in the entire country.

Apart from these two significant monuments, one can also find other historical and geographical gems in Ajmer, like the Taragarh Fort, Anasagar Lake, Foy Sagar Lake, and many more.

The nearest airport from Ajmer is the Sanganer Airport in Jaipur, located 135 km away, and is well-connected to major Indian metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai.
