Muscat: In a statement online, the Municipality stated its intent to combat negative environmental impact from vehicles abandoned in public places owing to health, environmental, social and economic reasons.
Listing out the health reasons, it pointed out the spread of rodents, insects and mosquitoes that transmit diseases.
On the environmental front, such vehicles can leak harmful oils, fuels and liquids into the ground and the groundwater, and cause damage to plants as well as environmental pollution, it noted.
Abandoned vehicles can also be a source of cultural distortion, as well create unappealing environment, along with a general lack of well-being and a sense of dissatisfaction, it explained under social reasons.
Economic reasons include decline in the real estate value of the surrounding area and distraction of municipal efforts towards addressing the damage resulting from such occurrences.
