Tour of Oman begins today

MUSCAT: The most anticipated sporting event of the year – the Tour of Oman begins today. A total of 18 teams with seven riders each will take part in challenging six stages across the country.

The highlight of the race this year is the inclusion of Suhar Corniche for the first time. The 138.5km first stage race will begin at Al Sawadi beach and ends at the Suhar Corniche. Defending champion Alexey Kutsenko of Team Astana will look to retain his title while the focus is on 2016 Rio Olympics champion Greg van Avermaet.

Speaking ahead of the race, Salim bin Mubarak al Hasani, head of the committee, Tour of Oman said: “Preparations are all set for one among the finest sporting events in the region. We have an excellent team who are working round the clock to ensure the event turns out to be a success.”

A total prize money of 101,380 euros including 11,000 euros for the overall winner will be up for grabs. The iconic race will conclude on Wednesday at the Muttrah Corniche.
