MUSCAT: Dr. Osama Al Khalisi has won the Best Researcher Award in the Resident Physician category at the annual conference ‘2022 American College of Emergency Physicians Scientific Assembly (ACEP)’ held recently at San Francisco, California, the Unites States of America.

Dr. Al Khalisi, who graduated from the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University, was participating in an oral research presentation for the first time in the largest scientific gathering of emergency medicine in the world. It is held annually since 1969 with the participation of more than 400 new scientific research papers in various fields of emergency medicine.

ACEP represents more than 38,000 physicians, resident, students and promotes the highest quality of emergency care and is the leading advocate for emergency physicians and their patients, and the public.   

The Omani physician researched on comparison of the pain reliever ketorolac by nasal spray with the same type of intravenous ketorolac in the treatment of renal colic and presented a new alternative to the intravenous treatment of acute renal colic pain in the emergency department, which is to provide the treatment as a nasal spray. This new method is easy to use, fast and does not require the use of a needle for intravenous treatment of the patient, as is the case in the traditional method.

The study involved 170 patients with renal colic and the study proved the efficiency and effectiveness of taking the drug by spray. 

 “I thank the Omani Council for Medical Specialties for providing this opportunity, the Scientific Research Council for funding the research idea, and Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, where the study was conducted,” he said at the awards ceremony.

“The idea of ​​the research revolves around the fact that a large percentage of patients who visit the emergency department may have pain as the main reason for their visit, and 5-15% of them suffer from acute renal colic; The aim of the study was to find an effective and easy-to-apply method to relieve pain when the patient arrives at the emergency and reduce the waiting period,” he continued.

 “The award is a great achievement that is noted in the Middle East due to the scarcity of participants from the Arab world and it is with great pride that the beloved Sultanate of Oman is at the forefront.  One of the most important achievements in emergency medicine is the presence of Omani specialists and consultants running this specialty in various governorates. The departments are now well-prepared, but the increasing demand for service remains a major pressure fact,” Dr. Al-Khilasi concluded.
