Muscat: Oman is preparing to implement mandatory health insurance for private-sector workers, residents and visitors, a top official informed on Monday.
Speaking at the introductory meeting on the project in the Dhofar Governorate organized by the Capital Market Authority,Ahmed bin Ali Al Maamari, head of the unified health insurance (Dhamani) team, said the preparations are in the advanced stages.
Under the policy, all persons employed by the private sector in Oman, as well as all visitors to the country, will be required to obtain health insurance through providers authorised by the CMA. The policy will also provide coverage to the spouses of employees in the private sector, as well as to their children under the age of 21.

According to Al Maamari, the details of the project will be submitted to the interested parties that include the employers, employees, insurance and health institutions and the third-party administrator (TPAs).
“The project will be introduced based on the classification of companies in the private sector by the Ministry of Manpower. To begin with, the project will be launched with international and excellent grade companies,” he said.
It is anticipated that health insurance coverage in the private sector will increase from around 470,000 workers to more than 2 million workers.
