MUMBAI : Riding on Quinton de Kock’s ton, some brutal late hitting from Heinrich Klaasen and bowlers’ brilliance South Africa registered a massive 149-run victory over Bangladesh in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 match at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.

The Proteas also garnered a massive net run rate boost with another emphatic win.

Defiant Mahmudullah was the only batter who stood tall today for Bangladesh but his vigilant knock of 111 runs went in vain as other batters failed to score big.

Gerald Coetzee was the destructor-in-chief as he returned with a 3-wicket haul while Lizaad Williams and Marco Jansen bagged two wickets respectively.

While chasing a whopping total of 383, a promising start to Bangladesh’s reply came to an end when Tanzid Hasan (12) gloved behind a short ball from Marco Jansen.

Jansen then strangled Najmul Hossain Shanto along the leg side on the next delivery.

Bangladesh’s chase lay in tatters as three wickets fell in the space of an eight-ball blitz during the first powerplay.

The all-rounder fell short of a hat-trick when his attempted yorker was converted into an easily defended full ball, but Lizaad Williams kept the wickets coming by dismissing Shakib Al Hasan (1). The wickets continued to fall as Gerald Coetzee dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim for 8.

Litton Das’ valiant battle came to an end when he was caught leg-before by Kagiso Rabada for a 44-ball 22. Keshav Maharaj joined the wicket-taking frenzy when he caught Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the deep for 11, ending Bangladesh’s pursuit before it had even begun.

With a superb knock from number six, Mahmudullah restored Bangladesh’s pride and helped his team avoid a record defeat. In a pressure run chase, Mahmudullah brought up his 67-ball World Cup fifty with Bangladesh seven wickets down.

Bangladesh veteran Mahmudullah slammed his fourth one-day international hundred; his third in ODI World Cups. With the help of the tail, Mahmudullah reached his own personal milestone with a high-class century against South Africa’s weary attack, coming off 104 balls.

Bangladesh did have reason to celebrate at the finish when Mahmudullah hit a century and the fans cheered in encouragement. However, the centurion’s exit ignited a string of quick wickets as South Africa won by 149 runs.

Earlier, a 20th ODI hundred from de Kock and some brutal hitting from Klaasen guided South Africa to a huge first-innings total of 382/5. De Kock finished with the second-highest World Cup score by a South African batter, while Klaasen was also at his savage best to give the Proteas a resounding total. A mind-boggling 217 runs were scored in the final 20 overs, with 144 coming in the final 60 deliveries.

Brief score: South Africa 382/5 (Quinton de Kock 174, Heinrich Klaasen 90; Hasan Mahmud 2-67) vs Bangladesh 233 (Mahmudullah 111, Litton Das 22; Gerald Coetzee 3-62). (ANI)

CHENNAI : After producing a stunning upset victory over their more fancied and bitter neighbours Pakistan, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi said his team has set sights on more such wins in their ongoing campaign at the ODI World Cup.

Leaving the cricketing world and pundits in utter disbelief, Afghanistan registered their second surprise victory in the World Cup and their first-ever win over Pakistan in 50-over cricket.

Riding on a dazzling all-round performance in the field, Afghanistan stunned their neighbours with a thumping eight-wicket defeat on a sluggish Chennai surface on Monday.

The opening pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65), and Ibrahim Zadran (87), along with Rahmat Shah (77)* at No.3, starred with the bat to help Afghanistan post a win for the ages.

Chasing 283, a challenging total on a Chennai pitch affording uneven bounce, Afghanistan cantered to a win by eight wickets, with an over to spare.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Shahidi lauded the team’s professional approach in chasing down the target.

“A win against Pakistan tastes nice. The way we chased we chased down the target…it was very professional. We are looking forward to the other games. We believe that we can pull off similar chases in the other matches as we go forward. We can do it again. The quality and brand of cricket we have been playing over the last couple of years is for everyone to see. The belief was there as well while we were playing the Asia Cup,” Shahidi said at the post-match presentation.

He added that his fellow teammates were eager to showcase their skills, play positive cricket and post more wins in the tournament.

Afghanistan has now got the better of two cricketing powerhouses — former world champions Pakistan and the defending champions England. The win lifted Afghanistan to sixth on the points table.

“At the start of the tournament, I said we want to make it historic for our country and fellow Afghans. We beat England, the reigning world champions, and then followed it up with a victory over Pakistan. We are eagerly looking forward to our other games. We’ll try our best to play positive cricket in this World Cup and bring some joy to people back home,” Shahidi added.

Lavishing praise on 18-year-old spinner Noor Ahmad, who was the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan, picking up three wickets, the skipper said his young teammate came up with an “outstanding” performance.

“Our spinners came good today. We gave a chance to Noor and he repaid our faith and demonstrated his talent and skills on the biggest stage. Gurbaz and Ibrahim got us off to a flier, giving us momentum and confidence for the batters to follow. The chase was in our control right from ball one to the end. The partnership that myself and Rahmat were involved in ensured no further hiccups along the way,” the Afghanistan captain said.

The high-flying Afghans will play Sri Lanka next on October 30 at the high-scoring Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. (ANI)

]]>
NEW DELHI : Regarded as one of the greatest left-arm spinners in world cricket, Bishan Singh Bedi passed away on Monday at the age of 77 years old in Delhi, leaving remarkable spin bowling stats behind.

Bedi is survived by his son and Bollywood actor Angad Bedi, who is married to Bollywood actor Neha Dhupia.

The legendary India spinner was known for his classical beauty of motion and ability to maintain a precise length over lengthy intervals while delicately altering his pace, trajectory, and release. At the time of his retirement, he was India’s leading Test wicket-taker, with 266 wickets at an average of 28.71.

He featured in 67 Tests for India between 1967 and 1979 and bagged 266 wickets. He also took seven wickets in 10 One-Day Internationals.

He played a pivotal role in India’s first ODI win. His cheap bowling figures of 12-8-6-1 restricted East Africa to 120 in a 1975 World Cup.

Bedi played Test cricket for India from 1966 to 1979 and he formed part of the famous Indian spin quartet (Bedi, EAS Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar and S Venkataraghavan). The legendary spinner also captained the national side in 22 Test matches.

He was also honoured with the Padma Shri Award in 1970. Bedi also represented Northamptonshire in English county cricket for many years.

Bedi was a master of flight and spin, famous for deceiving batters with subtle variations. He was instrumental in India’s historic series victory over England in 1971, captaining the team in the absence of the injured Ajit Wadekar. Under his leadership, India developed itself as a competitive cricketing nation.

The legendary spinner had an illustrious domestic cricket career, especially with the Delhi team, in addition to his international career. He was a mentor to several spinners and made substantial contributions to the development of young talent in India. Bedi’s impact on the sport extended beyond the ground, as he became a respected commentator and an advocate for sportsmanship and fair play.

The Amritsar-born spinner, who played domestic cricket for Delhi, finished his career with 1,560 wickets in first-class cricket –more than any other Indian.

He remains a respected personality in Indian cricket, honoured for his artistry and dedication to the sport.

“Like most great bowlers, his variation was subtle. Of all the slow bowlers of Bedi’s time, none forced you to commit yourself later than he did. With tiny, last-second adjustments of wrist and hand-angle, he could bowl successive balls that looked identical, perhaps as if each would land on a length just outside off stump,” the England captain Mike Brearley wrote of him as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

The Amritsar-born spinner was the leading wicket-taker amongst Indians in First-Class cricket with 1,560 wickets in 370 matches. He played 67 Tests for India between 1967 and 1979 and picked 266 wickets. He also took seven wickets in 10 One-Day Internationals

Bedi, along with Erapalli Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar and S. Venkataraghavan, was the architect of a revolution of sorts in India’s spin bowling history.

In the Australian summer of 1977-78, the Indian cricket team – under the leadership of Bedi – displayed one of its grittiest performances in the five-match Test series. Even though the results were 3-2 in favour of the Bob Simpson-led home team, Bedi’s team put on a mighty fight, clinching wins in the third and fourth Tests — in Melbourne and Sydney.

Bedi was the Indian national team’s first professional head coach in 1990 and emphasised fitness. After quitting the Indian team role, Bedi coached quite a few state teams and guided Punjab to its only Ranji Trophy win, in the 1992-93 season.

Bedi was chosen captain in 1976, succeeding Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. His first victory as captain came in the third Test of the 1976 series against the West Indies in Port-of-Spain when India set a new fourth-innings total of 406. Following this victory, India went on to win the series 2-0 at home against New Zealand. (ANI)

DHARAMSHALA : Following his side’s four-wicket win over New Zealand in their ICC Cricket World Cup match on Sunday, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami said one has to get his confidence up early after sitting out of the playing eleven for a while and his match-winning performance did his belief and world of good.

He added, however, that it was not too hard for him to wait on the sidelines for an opportunity to get into the playing eleven as the team fared phenomenally well with the combination it went with in the previous four matches.

Shami and ‘Chase Master’ Virat Kohli were the biggest stars of India as, riding on their dazzling performances with the ball and the willow, the hosts registered their fifth successive win in the World Cup, thereby taking a giant stride towards sealing a spot in the top-four.

The four-wicket victory over the Kiwis, who had been at the top of the points table going into this clash, saw India leap-frog them to the pole position with 10 points.

The win also saw the ‘Men in Blue’ end its agonising 20-year losing streak to New Zealand at ICC events.

“When you come back after a long time to the XI, it is important to get confidence early. My first game in the (ongoing) World Cup helped me regain that confidence. It’s not too hard (waiting on the sidelines) if your team is doing well. They are your teammates and if they are doing well then you should be supporting them. If it’s in the team’s interest, I am okay with it. The wickets were important as it came against an opponent, which was sitting top of the points table going into this clash,” Shami said at the post-match presentation.

After winning the toss and putting New Zealand into bat, the Men in Blue got off to an ideal start, reducing the Kiwis to 19/2 inside the powerplay.

However, a 159-run stand thereafter between centurion Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra helped NZ make a strong comeback.

The hosts hit back with wickets in the latter half of the New Zealand innings, bowling the visitors out for 273 runs in 50 overs.

Shami (5/54) was the pick of the bowlers for India while Kuldeep Yadav (2/73) finished strongly after being taken to the cleaners in the initial overs.

India’s new-ball pair of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj took a wicket apiece.

Chasing 274, India were off to a sensational start, with the opening pair of skipper Rohit Sharma (46 in 40 balls, with four boundaries and four sixes) and Shubhman Gill (26 in 31 balls, with five fours) raising a 71-run stand for the first wicket.

India did lose Shreyas Iyer (33), KL Rahul (27) and Suryakumar Yadav as the innings progressed, but Virat Kohli (95* in 104 balls, with eight fours and two sixes) and Ravindra Jadeja (39* in 44 balls, three fours and a six) guided the hosts to a four-wicket win with two overs to spare.

Lockie Ferguson (2/63) was the pick of the bowlers for NZ while Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner got a wicket apiece.

BARCELONA: Oman’s Al-Faisal Al-Zubair and German team-mate Fabian Schiller claimed a stunning second place in the final race of the 2023 International GT Open series at the 4.657km Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain on Sunday afternoon.

After being taken out of the opening race from pole position on the first corner of race one on Saturday, Al-Zubair qualified the Al-Manar Racing by Getspeed Mercedes AMG GT3 in third for the second of the weekend’s races and he and Schiller brought the car to the finish in the runner-up spot after Schiller passed Charlie Fagg’s Optimum Motorsport McLaren on the final lap.

Al-Zubair said: “After yesterday’s accident, which was very unfortunate, we started on P3 after one of the guys got a penalty for cutting, so that was a great qualifying. But I lost a few positions on the start. But finishing P2 was very good. We are very happy with that.”

Schiller had qualified the Mercedes on pole for the opening race on Saturday with a best lap of 1min 38.832sec. “We had some trouble on Friday but the car was mega in qualifying,” said the German. “It’s nice to be back in the GT Open with no pressure.”

The plan was for Al-Zubair and Schiller to push hard for victory in race one, despite their obvious 20-second handicap in a race where David Fumanelli had qualified the Kessel Ferrari in second ahead of Fagg and the CBRX by SPS Mercedes of Yannick Mettler.

Unfortunately, for Schiller, he started the race from pole position and was sandwiched between Mettler and Fagg at turn one with the McLaren hit from the rear and causing chaos ahead with Schiller, Fagg and Mettler spinning and getting stranded at the first corner. Mettler and Schiller managed to pit and the race restarted after a yellow flag on lap four but Schiller retired the Mercedes in the pits.

Victory eventually fell to the Eastalent Racing Audi of Simon Reicher and Christopher Haase and they moved to the top of the points’ standings as a result and also after winning a recent appeal following a recent race in Austria.

Pole position for race two was taken by Maximilian Paul in the Oregon Team Lamborghini with a run of 1min 38.900sec. Haase qualified in second and Al-Zubair lined up on the second row of the grid in fourth place alongside Dominik Baumann’s SPS Mercedes.

In warm, sunny conditions on a dry track, Mikaeel Pitamber and Baumann claimed victory in the second race at the helm of the SBS Mercedes, with Al-Zubair and Schiller grabbing the second spot on the podium after a thrilling finish when the safety car was deployed and the race was yellow flagged late on.

Fagg and De Haan looked set to finish second in the Optimum Motorsport McLaren but Schiller pressurised Fagg through the final minutes in the battle for the runner-up spot and passed the Briton after a stunning move on the last lap.

The result meant that the Eastalent Racing Audi of Simon Reicher and Christopher Haase tied with Diego Menchaca (Motopark Mercedes) in the International GT Open after four teams had entered the final race separated by just nine points. The Audi duo was handed the title on a countback tie-break, having earned one more second-place finish during the season.

MUSCAT: Oman’s cricket team’s head coach Duleep Mendis was “satisfied and proud” of his players after the national team took an unassailable 4-0 lead in the five-match T20 series against the visiting Afghanistan A (AfghanAbdalyan) side.

The series victory comes as a perfect boost for Oman as they prepare for the 2023 ICC Men’s T20I World Cup Asia Regional Final, scheduled to be held later in Nepal this month.

AfghanAbdalyan, who are on their maiden tour to Oman, had won the two 50-over-a-side games but the hosts came back strongly to claim the first four matches in the T20 series. The final match of the series will be played on Monday.

Duleep Mendis’ men will be hoping to qualify for their third ICC T20 World Cup in Nepal and will battle with seven other nations for the lone spot from Asia in the T20 World Cup, co-hosted by West Indies and the USA in 2024.

Speaking after Oman took an unbeatable lead with a five-wicket win in the fourth T20, Mendis said: “It has been a perfect build-up for our boys ahead of the Nepal ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier. We wanted to try out combinations and see the best possible options for the team. I am satisfied and proud that the boys have executed the plans to perfection to win four matches on a trot. We hope to make a clean sweep and head to Nepal with good confidence.”

The Sri Lankan great, who has guided Oman to T20 World Cup in 2016 and 2021 now wishes to make it three times when his team fights out in Nepal against UAE, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Malaysia, Singapore, and hosts Nepal. Oman are clubbed with Nepal, Malaysia and Singapore in Group A.

Oman skipper Zeeshan Maqsood, Aqib Ilyas, Kashyap Prajapati, Shoaib Khan and Pratik Athavale were among the runs in the four games. In the bowling department, Aqib impressed along with fellow spinners Ayaan Khan and Shakeel Ahmed. Medium pacers Kaleemullah, Bilal Khan, Fayyaz Butt and Mehran Khan also came up with encouraging display.

Oman won the first game by nine wickets and then claimed a seven-run victory in the next match. In the third match, Oman cruised to a 15-run triumph while on Saturday night, the hosts clinched a thrilling five-wicket win with two balls to spare.

Aqib slammed two half-centuries including a 46-ball 84 and 35-ball 65 in the four games while Shoaib Khan was the other batter to hit a half-century. Prajapati, Maqsood and Athavale also made notable contributions with the bat.

Kaleemullah returned with match-winning figures of 3-26 in the third T20 game while Bilal’s best spell was also in the same game with 2-22. Aqib returned with figures of 3-21 in the opening T20 game to back up his unbeaten half-century (65*) that came off just 35 balls and included three boundaries and six maximums.

Mendis said: “After the two close defeats in the 50-over-a-side games, we were keen to make a strong comeback in the T20s, and more so, as we are preparing for the Asia regional final qualifier in Nepal. The boys rose to the occasion, and it is an important series to get our rhythm and combination right against a strong Afghanistan A side.

He added: “The morale-boosting win in the first four games gives us lot of positives and we have been doing good with batting and bowling. One area of concern is fielding, and we need to keep on improving. We hope to iron out our fielding concerns by the time we arrive in Nepal. All in all, the 4-0 lead with a game remaining has given the boys a strong belief. I am happy to have tried out few combinations and though the final team composition will be finalised in Nepal, it has been a fruitful tour for us.”
